4 Months: A P2P Whirlwind

March 19th, 2008

Its now March 2008- four months since we launched P2PCleaner. Since the launch, the world has exploded with P2P applications and potential solutions to the “problem” of delivery cost on the internet. Several P2P providers have struck deals with major media companies, and most CDNs have started experimenting with P2P relationships. We spoke at the P2P Summit at CES and had great conversations with many of the “legit” P2P providers.

We are currently wrapping up the second release of P2PCleaner which will feature more applications, stronger code, and a codebase for the commercial release.

The commercial release will be geared towards universities and businesses who seek to manage P2P applications in their environment.

New, Free P2PCleaner is First Publicly Available Application

Designed to Detect, Manage and Remove P2P Software

With P2PCleaner, Users Have ‘Ability, Not Liability’ in File Sharing

NEW YORK CITY, November 5, 2007 – P2PCleaner, first of a new family of software designed to bring law and order to home, office, and campus computers and networks that run peer-to-peer applications, has been introduced by Peer Innovations.

A free home version of the patent-pending P2PCleaner for Windows® XP and Vista™ is available at www.p2pcleaner.com. The free version of P2PCleaner is fully functional, and gives users “ability, not liability,” said Steve Lerner, CEO of Peer Innovations. The company, he said, plans to offer university, business, ISP, and SDK licenses for P2PCleaner.

Regaining Performance and Managing Resources

“Peer-to-peer file sharing is spreading like wildfire,” he said, “and before the public availability of P2PCleaner, sharing of files also carried a substantial downside, including loss of system performance, consumption of substantial bandwidth, and a myriad of legal issues.

“Over time, peer-to-peer technology becomes a very elegant solution to reducing performance bottlenecks on networks,” Mr. Lerner explained, “However, peer-to-peer software can also be used to take advantage of users who are not aware of its installation or impact on their systems. Our software enables transparent usage and management of peer-to-peer software and protects the user.”

The P2PCleaner approach uses low impact technology that does not further consume bandwidth or resources. P2PCleaner is designed in recognition that there are many uses for peer-to-peer file sharing, some of which may create a burden on a local network due to uploads of music, videos, and software. P2PCleaner provides the ability to identify and manage peer-to-peer applications.

Legal Issues of P2P Filing Sharing Grow

P2PCleaner is also intended to address the inherent liability for copying and storing pirated or otherwise illegally obtained files.

“As recent court cases show,” Mr. Lerner said, “liability can often fall on the owner of the network or computer for allowing the pirated files to traverse its systems. P2PCleaner addresses this issue by offering customized solutions that enable network and computer owners to manage peer-to-peer file sharing. “

Performance issues created by peer-to-peer software, he said, are likely to continue to grow as P2P delivery systems gain acceptance among content owners including media, video game, and software companies. Problems will increase for home users in particular as each content owner requires installation of different P2P software to access the content they wish to deliver.

“Companies want control over end-user computers to lower their bandwidth cost,” Mr. Lerner added. “Just imagine 10 or more different P2P programs running in memory, fighting for network capacity and computer resources. P2PCleaner is the first publicly available software to help mitigate this situation.”

The First Publicly Available Family of P2P Management Tools

With P2PCleaner introduced, Peer Innovations plans to make other applications and services available shortly for:

– College campuses and schools, to enforce compliance with anti-piracy law and the policies and standards set by the institution;

– Corporations, deploying a product that regulates P2P use in the workplace;

– Internet Service Providers, who can bundle a product which includes a default installer to manage file sharing on “the last mile;”

– Content Owners, who can deploy P2PCleaner with their media player to ensure that their content’s file transfer system is given the necessary priority by the PC and/or network, and

– Software and operating systems developers, to help ensure that a computer’s resources aren’t unreasonably consumed by peer-to-peer

– P2P software and services companies, to help increase software adoption and legitimate use of peer-to-peer technology
